Statement of Significance

Claremont Post Office is important as an example of the work of the Government Architect George Temple Pool who also designed the Claremont Station Master's House, the School and the former Police Station - all in similar style. The Post Office is a critical historical link with the establishment of public services in the commercial centre of Claremont, and is environmentally related to the adjacent station complex and hotel.

Physical Description

Consisting of limestone walls and terracotta tiled roof, modern alterations have been the paining of the entire external wall surface, alterations to the entrance porches on NW and SW corners of the building, enclosure of the verandah on the north and minor alterations elsewhere. The interior has now been considerably altered.

History

Assessment 1983
Claremont Post Office was designed by George Temple Pool and constructed in 1896. The building originally comprised a Post and Telegraph Office and quarters. Since its establishment the building has been altered and extended and no longer houses any residential accommodation.
The extent of this assessment applies to the north and west walls and the form of the roof in relation of these walls.
