Category 2

Buildings which also contribute to the character and atmosphere of Peppermint Grove. These buildings may be altered or extended in a manner which recognises and retains some original features or which may be demolished, but the replacement building should recognise by its position the adjoining residence and precinct. The owner to provide an archival record for any building demolished under this category and the Shire to provide a plaque for inclusion in the adjoining footpath to recognise the cultural significance of the property.

Statement of Significance

The rendered brick, timber, concrete and shingled tile roof, in
PostWar Georgian Revival style, has cultural significance
because:
its association with prominent businesspeople Harry
Boan, Garrick Agnew and Robert Holmes A'Court;
it illustrates the influence of post war North
American trends on certain groups in Australia;
it is a PostWar place established for captains of
cormnerce and to suit their social activities.

Physical Description

The choice of style for a large post war place illustrates both
conservativism and the influence of post war North American
trends on Australia.

History

The place has been owned by a succession of successful WA
businessmen: It was built originally for Harry Boan of Boans
Ltd, one of Western Australia's best known and successful
retailers. It was then owned by Garrick Agnew, a mining
enterpreneur and swimming champion. The place was then
owned by Robert Holmes A'Court, a spectacularly successful
businessman of the 1980s. Considerable historical
significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

The place is a professionally competent example of its style
and period.
