The place is a good example of Post War International Style in the metropolitan area.
The place has aesthetic significance, as it is an excellent example of 1950’s architecture in the City of Perth.
The place contributes to the Streetscape of Adelaide Terrace.
‘Four storey concrete frame building. Building addresses the corner. Mostly sand brick walls to ground floor with the glazing above. Adorn by vertical concrete elements. Precast concrete sun grille on western façade.’
Development in the city of Perth during the 1950s was facilitated by population growth and material well-being. After the Second World War the Australian Government introduced an immigration campaign which increased Perth’s population rapidly, population growth of such magnitude inevitable left its mark upon the city. Development plans for the city of Perth were published in 1955 to accommodate growing numbers. Part of the plan states that ‘offices will continue to spread eastwards along Adelaide Terrace…’
Form the late 1950s investment in mineral exploration and development returned handsome result. The wealth accrued as a result of these years was expressed in a building boom of some magnitude, particularly in the Central Business District.
At this time in Australia Architects and Planners were affected by overseas and interstate fashions. Apperly states:
‘The Post War International Style acceptance in Australia marked a new beginning after the end of WW2. ‘The functional tradition of inter-war Europe and the United States found ready acceptance in an expanding Australian economy…. [and was] Enthusiastically embraced by large corporations…’
