Four storey reinforced concrete frame building. Building addresses the corner. Mostly sand brick walls to ground floor with the glazing above. adorn by vertical concrete elements. Precast concrete sun grille on western facade.

History

Summerhayes as an architectural firm was established in Kalgoorlie by Edwin Summerhayes in 1895, during the gold boom. The Perth office opened in 1897. In 1926 Edwin’s son Reginald Summerhayes joined and the company’s reputation grew under his influence. The third generation of architect, Geoffrey Summerhayes, joined the firm in 1952 and the name changed to Summerhayes and Associates. Together with Darryl Way, Colin Moore and Ralph Drexel, they became renowned for their Post-War International designs, one such being the five storey Chamber of Manufacturers Insurance (CMI) building at 212 Adelaide Terrace, on the northeast corner of the intersection of Hill Street.
The Chamber of Manufacturers Insurance which served Victoria, South Australia, West Australia and Tasmania, was bought out by Manufacturers Mutual Insurance (MMI) in 1989 which became Allianz Australia in 2000.The CMI office was erected in 1957, replacing a row of five terraced houses at 212-220 Adelaide Terrace. The Hill street elevation features concrete and face brick breeze blocks and the Adelaide Terrace elevation is panelled and glazed, with strong vertical lines. The corner has a concrete feature column with CMI in large lettering. There is a tennis court on the north side of the building, which was installed in 2004, replacing an earlier carpark, and a house at 44 Hill Street.
