Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey Inter War Californian Bungalow dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area. Has undergone significant alterations but original form remains intact.

Physical Description

Single storey face brick and terracotta hipped and half timbered gabled roof house. The roof has a brick chimney with terracotta pots, a front gablet and terracotta finials. The roof extends over the verandah, which is supported by replacement timber square posts and a replacement timber floor. There is an early date timber framed and batten lean to at the rear.The front fence is a late addition brick and iron fence. There is access to a rear battleaxe block.

The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape South Street; 75-77, 79, 80, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86,87, 88, 90, 91, 94, 98, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 114, 140 & 142.

A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Dec 2009 by Philip Griffiths Architects for a DA submission to Council (DA0659/09) for a second storey addition.
