Statement of Significance

• Formerly, the properties as a group had aesthetic value for their contribution to the Yarloop heritage area.
• Formerly, the properties as a group demonstrated the standard type of housing provided for mill workers by their employers.

Physical Description

A group of timber framed workers cottages that display many similarities in scale, design and expression of detail. Collectively they create an attractive and coherent streetscape predominantly along the western side of Barrington-Knight Road.

The properties included in this precinct are numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 and each house has its own entry.

All the buildings and structures that formed part of this precinct were destroyed by the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire.

History

Simple timber cottages built in the townsite for the accommodation of workers primarily at the timber mill and later the Yarloop workshops.

The houses were built predominantly by the company which owned and managed the town, Millar's Timber and Trading Company from the 1890s to the 1970s. The materials for the cottages were likely to have been manufactured in the workshop and local tradesmen built the homes to standard designs.

Barrington-Knight Road was originally named Hospital Road.

Families and individuals known to have lived in this road include; Mills, Walter Smith, Bill 'Winker' Savage, Ray Dickson/Dixon, Roy and Trixie Williamson, Bob Guest, Cattach, Huon.

All the dwellings and structures located in this precinct were completely destroyed by the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire. The chimneys of each house and the hospital within that precinct however survived. These chimneys have since been removed as they were deemed structurally unsound.
