Statement of Significance

The place reflects the expansion and development of residential and commercial buildings on the city fringes during the rapid population increase of the 1890s gold boom and the early years of the twentieth century.
The place is representative of a commercial building dating from the early twentieth century.
The place has associations with local furniture manufacturer Sunshine Veneer Works.

Physical Description

Single storey row of shops with cantilevered awning and decorative parapet concealing the roofline. The facade is rendered with tile to 3/4 height. The awning is supported with iron brackets.

History

In 1897 there are eight listings in the Post Office directory for the area between William and Lake Streets. These listings may include those living behind dwellings along the main street. All appear to be houses, apart from Green & Co. grocers, near the Lake Street intersection.
In 1909, Mr Thomas Bonner is listed for No. 225 and Angus McIntosh, veterinary surgeon, in No. 229. Mr Bonner was the original owner of lots Y76/77. In 1935, Thomas Dewhurst, veterinary surgeon, is listed for No. 229.There were premises behind No. 227-229. In 1935, the furniture manufacturers, Sunshine Veneer Works, was located there.
A women's health centre is currently located in the building.
