Historic - .Jackitup was a small centre that may have developed into a town. There was a hall, school
and sports ground enjoyed by the farming folk in the area. The school was the first of the existing bus
schools to close when the bus service was provided.
The school was a weatherboard building with an iron roof. The walls were
lined halfway up with wood and unlined to the ceiling.
A plaque has been erected to mark the site.
The Jackitup school was opened by Miss Minnie Connolly on the 10th September, 1913. Classes were
conducted in a hall built by settlers. This hall was also used for Church meetings. Sunday School and
dances. A new school was built and opened on 19th June. 1924. This school was alongside the
Jackitup Hall. The school was closed 3rd April, 1947 and the children bused to Gnowangerup. The
school was resited and used as a classroom at the Gnowangerup school for many years.
