Statement of Significance

The place was one of four electricity substations constructed by Perth City Council to operate in conjunction with the State Government’s East Perth Power Station from 1916, the first centralised electricity supply in Perth, and continued to operate as an electricity substation into the twenty-first century.
The place is a good example of a utilitarian building designed in the Federation Free Classical style to fit within a city streetscape, an approach to constructing and siting industrial buildings that is no longer practised.
The place is a good representative example of electricity substations constructed in the early twentieth century, particularly those associated with the East Perth Power Station.
The J & E Ledger cast iron spiral staircase is a good example of decorative ironwork for an industrial purpose.

Physical Description

Single storey substation with rectangular facade details emphasised by section over the entrance. Extensive use of stucco decoration. Arched doorway to street.

History

The substation was constructed in 1914 to supply electricity to part of the City of Perth. The substation was part of the network of substations which linked the power meters and cables around Perth. The first electricity in Perth was generated by the Western Australian Electric Light and Power Company in 1888. In 1893 the Perth Gas Company became the main supplier after distributing gas for 10 years. The Perth City Council bought Perth Gas Company in 1911, however the State Government purchased the Perth Electric Tramways Ltd, the other major producer of electricity and proposed to enter an agreement to establish a central power station. Part of the agreement was that the Government would supply a main cable ring which had high-tension switchgear and meter panel points at substations on the main cable ring.
In 1925 some alterations were made to the building. In 1946 the State Electricity Commission was established to provide electricity to the State. It purchased the Electricity and Gas Company from the City of Perth in 1948 The building was decommissioned in the 1980s.
