History

Fremantle TAFE, was a ten-acre campus of 11 educational buildings set in landscaped
grounds which were constructed in 1968 to replace the earlier Fremantle Technical School in South Terrace in central Fremantle.
The design by Hobbs Winning & Leighton Architects showed the influence of the Post-War International Style. Fremantle TAFE comprises single and two storey functional steel framed, glass and glass brick buildings. The front elevation of the main building featured glazed sections from ground to ceiling height on one side, and high level windows to the other. An open grassed area with a central path and steps lead to the entrance which had a portico with steel post supports.
The complex was modified and refurbished in the 1970s and 1980s and large buildings
added in 1981 and 1983.
The place was added to the Fremantle Municipal Inventory in 2000 and the Heritage List in 2008.
After a major restructuring of technical education in W.A. in 2016, Fremantle TAFE was closed, and the buildings vacated. The site remained vacant over the next few years and was badly vandalised. Demolition was approved in 2022 and the site was cleared of buildings shortly after.
In 2023 the heritage listing for this place was reviewed as part of the Annual Update of The Heritage List and Local Heritage Survey. On 13 March 2024 Council resolved to remove this place from the Heritage List and to change the Local Heritage Survey Management Category to Level 4 Historic Record Only.
