25542 Workers' Homes Board and War Service Homes Precinct, Fremantle
83 Holland Street is a single storey masonry and tile house constructed as a simple variation of the Inter-War California Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted roughcast rendered brick, red face brick (stretcher bond) on a limestone base. The roof is hipped and tile clad. The front entry porch sits under a separate projecting gable tiled roof. The verandah is supported by twin masonry piers with a face brick balustrade. The projecting gable is timber battened with decorative timber brackets. The front façade has simple timber framed awnings over double hung timber windows. The place has no front boundary fence.
This section of Holland Street was developed by the Workers’ Home Board in the 1930s.
Lot EM 1072 on which 83 Holland Street is located was vacant government land in 1932/33. On 1 March 1935, a Workers Homes Board house was being built and the first tenant was Alfred Thomas McKinley.
The house was originally number 154, and became number 83 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937.
McKinley was still living in the house until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease). By that stage he had purchased the house.
Aerial photos show that between 2000 and 2015 the lot was subdivided and a two-storey timber house was built at the rear.
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
