Statement of Significance
The buildings at Marribank have aesthetic, historical and social significance, and the place has been permanently entered on the State Register of Heritage Places.
Physical Description
The Marribank complex has a number of buildings. Our photographic records show three residential type buildings, and one hall (school). The residential type buildings are constructed in a similar style, with stone walls, brick quoining on the corners and around the doors and windows, and a verandah under separate roof across the front elevation. One of the buildings has a prominent wing in the gabled facade and a large central window. The roofs are corrugated iron. The hall is a large rectangular stone building, with a steeply pitched gabled roof. It also has brick quining on the corners and around the doors and windows.
History
In 1905 Marribank was gazetted as a place for the Aboriginal people of the Cherry Tree Pool district. It was considered a good area for settlement because of the natural pool of fresh water. In 1914 the WA State Government declared the area a native mission. A school with some amenities was established, and the administrator and a teacher were appointed. During WWI some stone buildings were erected. The stone was quarried and carted by the Aboriginal people of the Mission.
After the war Marribank became known as a settlement instead of a mission. The settlement was closed in 1922 and the land was leased out for farming. It was reopened in 1933 and has had a number of organisational changes. It has been guided by the Native Affairs Department and the Baptist Union.
The Mission/Settlement changed hands in 1989 and at that time a large Aboriginal community still lived there.
