The place is significant as a landmark building and as part of a streetscape of historic buildings.
The place is important as a very rare and well executed example of the Victorian Second Empire style.
The place was designed by Henry Trigg, the first Western Australia born and trained architect. Trigg was also influential in the development of the Institute of Architects.
The place is historically important for its development contiguous with the Fremantle to Guildford railway line and Perth Railway Station.
The place’s progressive development from 1882 to 1906 represents the rapid increase in the prosperity and population of Western Australia as a result of the gold boom.
The place’s continued operation as a hotel on this site since 1882 contributes to the community's sense of place.
Commercial building distinguished by a diversity of roof forms and iron filigree ornamentation to mansards. Top storey treated as an attic; street facades embellished with classical details. Lost original detail at ground floor level and verandah.
The Royal Hotel was built in 1882 and extended and altered in 1894, 1906, 1926 & 1935. The hotel was constructed during a period of great change in Central Perth, firstly due to the railway line and secondly due to the gold boom. The gold boom saw the economy and the population of the state boom where a range of private buildings began to emerge and their architecture was a celebration of the discovery of gold and the prosperity of the state.
High level of integrity.
Medium level of authenticity as it has lost original detail at ground floor level but intact above.
Very Good
