The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of exceptional cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle. This place is entered onto the Heritage Council of Western Australia’s Register of Heritage Places. All development applications must be referred to the Heritage Council for approval.

Physical Description

Built of load bearing stone. Symmetrical front elevation. Curvilinear parapeted gables used as the predominant feature of the street elevation. The single storey front entrance to the building is via battlement parapeted bay with small gabled pediment. The entrance is flanked by the stone parapeted gables of the main building. Behind the entrance bay rises the central gable, consisting of two subsidiary curvilinear gables supporting the central pitched gable. These are ornamented with masonry finials and barge course Gothic arches and large timber trusses to main assembly room, also a Tudor-style fireplace. Open fireplaces in classrooms Brick chimneys rotated 45 degrees.

History

Designed by W.A. Sanford (Col. Sec), completed 1854 with convict labour; boys school opened 1855, due largely to the efforts of Rev. J B Wittenoom. The original building is a T-shaped structure almost totally hidden by later accretions. 1910 additions by PWD. Often referred to as Humble's school after the headmaster , Mr GB Humble 1874 - 1891. First building was limestone, later additions brick, galvanised iron roof over shingles
