Statement of Significance

House, 12 Herbert Street, is a typical stone and iron single storey cottage dating from the early 1900s. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of North Fremantle. Historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the North Fremantle area.

Physical Description

Single storey stone and iron cottage constructed in c1900 - c1910. Walls are limestone with brick quoins and reveals. Roof is hipped corrugated iron with no eaves. The high timber fence on the front boundary line and large trees in the front garden make further detail difficult to ascertain.

History

Originally known as Mary Street, the majority of Herbert Street was developed between 1900 and 1910 (predominantly brick and stone houses), although some lots remained vacant until the immediate post-World War Two period (predominantly weatherboard houses). The street accommodated a mixture of owner/occupier residences and rental properties. Mary Street was gazetted as a public highway in 1905 and the name was changed to Herbert Street in 1922/23.

The date of construction of House, 12 Herbert Street is not known, although it likely to have been built between 1900 and 1910. In 1921/22, the place was recorded as being a five roomed brick and stone house, owned and occupied by James Calder. Ownership was transferred to Dora Griffiths, an old age pensioner, in 1930/31.

A 1939 diagram shows House, 12 Herbert Street as being weatherboard, with a half length front verandah and a centrally located front path. At this time, there was a small outbuilding to the rear of the back yard.

There were a number of occupants during the 1940s and ownership during this time is not known. Ernest Hamer owned and occupied 12 Herbert Street from c. 1949 until 1961. The place has had a number of owners since that time.

This place was included in the 'North Fremantle Heritage Study' (1994) as a place contributing to the development and heritage of North Fremantle. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
