• The place is a representative example of the type of State Housing Commission residence provided to RAAF personnel.
• The place represents a category of government employee housing provided by the State Housing Commission in a manner that was different to other government employees and the wider community.
Single detached dwelling on 727sqm residential lot. Two bedrooms (right front and right middle), bathroom, laundry, water closet, kitchen, dining and lounge room. Enclosed sleepout at rear of the property and wooden porch at the front of the property.
House, 22 St Albans Rd, Nollamara was constructed c.1958 by the State Housing Commission (SHC). However, once completed it became a rental property for Royal Australian Air Force personnel. The Commonwealth-State Housing Agreement Act operated from 1956 at which time the State Housing Commission began to provide housing for serving members of the armed forces. The SHC used standard plans but added features to bring them up to Defence housing standards. By the mid-1970s over 1000 houses had been provided but as demand began to wane the SHC negotiated an agreement to use vacant Defence housing for general social housing. The SHC ceased their involvement with Defence Housing in 1989, but not before the housing stock had been split between State and Commonwealth.
