• The place has landmark value due to its massing, corner location and setting near the Canning River.
• The hotel is associated with the settlement and development of the Gosnells area at the turn of the twentieth century.
• The place appears to be the earliest ,if not the first, hotel built in the area.
• The place has high social significance for its use as recreational and social venue and community meeting place.
A two storey red brick and corrugated iron hotel building with prominent, half timbered gables to street fronts and tall distinctive chimneys. The building has a double storey timber framed verandahs are situated to the street elevations. The external walls feature rendered string courses and projecting sills with timber framed doors and double hung windows. New brickwork used in alterations to the ground floor have been reconstructed to match existing. A single storey addition has been built using similar materials and details.
The Gosnells Hotel was built for the Connell family in 1905. At the time, it had a recreation ground/paddock known as the ‘Pleasure Grounds’, the ‘Assembly Hall’ and accommodation for weekenders. The assembly hall was initially used to celebrate Catholic Mass and was a venue for other social events such as ‘picnic parties’. The recreation ground/paddock located behind the hotel was the original grounds used by the local football team as well as by other sporting clubs. Parry’s Circus also performed there regularly. The place was renovated and added to in the 1960s and 1970s due to increased use. Hotelier Geoff Ogden carried out extensions and renovations to the hotel. This included the construction of a 400 seat restaurant and a bottle shop.
