Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a significance in the associations with settlers from different periods, and particularly Charlie Rose who had an impact on the social life of the district, as well as farming. The place is a fine representative example of a type of settlement, of which very few remain.

Physical Description

The timber framed and fibro clad cottage is elevated form the ground on stumps. The two room frontage has a verandah on one side with the room recessed.

History

Charlie Rose was born at the Yarling Brook farm in Malyalling to Charles and Evin Rose in 1911. Charlie Rose was well known in the district for his piano playing. He was the feature at most dances and the pictures. He also ran the dairy from where the town farm of Yarling Brook farm is located in Richter Street in Wickepin. (see Ref No. 26). In 1936 Charlie Rose married the Wickepin school teacher Phyllis Moncrieff. He served in the RAAF in World War Two. When he returned, the Rose's lived in the Anglican rectory until in 1951 when they were allotted Toravee in the Soldier Settlement Land Scheme. The farm was a run-down rabbit eaten plot of land comprising of portions of Carters and Snows properties. The Roses developed the land into a successful farm. In 1988 Charlie Rose passed away, and Mrs Rose retired to a new home on the site of the Rectory which had been demolished in 1976. Charlie Rose's son carries on the tradition and has built a new homestead in close proximity to the 1952 soldier settlement home.
