There are two aspects of significance relating to this site. First, the plaque includes the information that stage one of the Ord River Irrigation Project was opened by the then Prime Minister of Australia on 20th July 1963. This indicates the important value placed on this project by the Federal Government. The mosaic was designed by Elizabeth Durack. She not only descends from a famous Kimberley pastoralist family but has a reputation as an outstanding artist. Elizabeth was born on Argyle Station and much of her work represents scenes reminiscent of her experience in the Kimberley.
The monument can be found set in a mosaic of river stones with designs derived from Aboriginal rock art arranged by Elizabeth Durack. It is situated on the left hand side of the entrance to the diversion dam when one is travelling in a westerly direction. On the monument is attached the plaque which notes the date of the official opening of the Ord Irrigation Project by Sir Robert Menzies, the Prime Minister of Australia. It also includes all the main people involved in ovcrsecring the funding, organization and planning of the project.
