Statement of Significance

The Leeman Primary School has historic and social significance given its role in education in the local community and its use as a social centre for the early settlers of the district.

Physical Description

The original generator shed is just south of the tennis courts, however the original classroom has been removed. The present building is constructed of cream brick and fibro infill with an asbestos roof. The classrooms surround a central courtyard. Each classroom is lit through a south facing glassed gable which extends above the roof line. Verandahs extend from each classroom into the courtyard, the verandahs are supported on metal posts and have trimdeck roofing. The timber and trim is painted green.

History

Opened in 1971 the school has not only been used for educational purposes but also as the centre for many local social gatherings. Originally only one transportable classroom was used until the new school was built in 1978. From about 1972 and for about 16 years, the present site of the tennis court was used as an open air cinema. The 16mm projector was donated by L. Wann and B. McTaggart, the admission charge was 50 cents. The inaugural headmaster was B. Baskerville and the school was officially opened by D. Brand MLA on the 11th of December 1971. The second primary school was opened by Reg Tubby MLA on the 23rd of November 1979.(Sources: Commemorative Plaques, inside courtyard and near fish pond, and B & S McTaggart).
