Statement of Significance

Important as part of the group of early buildings along Paterson Street and as a remnant of the baking industry in the shire.

Physical Description

Basic brick and corrugated iron building featuring hipped roof, painted brick and small window cavities. Located at the rear of house on the main street of Mundijong (opposite the railway line). The oven is a Semi-scotch with a furnace at the side.

History

The first bakehouse was constructed from timber in 1905. During the 1920s, a new brick bakehouse was constructed by Cecil Copeman and his two sons, Wally and Ray. It is this bakehouse that supplied bread to Jarrahdale, and during the Second World War supplied to army camps and the POW camp at Jarrahdale. The bakery changed hands many times until 1952 when John J.V. Wholagan took over the purchase from his brother who had taken ill in 1952. The Wholagan family continued to run the bakery for 26 years. The business was sold to Ian Spencer who continued to bake and deliver from Mundijong for some years before he went into a bakery business in Pioneer Village Armadale and closed the bakery in Mundijong.
