Statement of Significance

The church has considerable significance to the Anglican community in Bolgart since 1939, and has a sense of place for the many ceremonies, events and special occasions that have taken place. The church is a fine example of a stone gothic style

Physical Description

Stone construction with a 45 degree pitch clay tiled roof. Strict instructions trom the Architect determined a red porch floor and natural stone work in the church to a dado height of 4'6" from the floor level. Above the stonework the walls are clad in squares.

History

In 1906/7, when land opened up in the Wattening area, the Camerer and Ludemann families took up the virgin land. Anglican services were held at St Phillip's Culham Church at that time, but the long trip was difficult. Mr Rudolph Camerer, a former lay preacher (Methodist and Presbyterian) in Victoria, conducted a monthly church service in the Bejoording School. Later Reverend Edward Saunders came from Toodyay and held Church of England services in the Wattening Hall. The hall was also used as a school, and when a new school was built due to the unsafe condition, the church services transferred to the Bolgart town. By 1938, the congregation recognised the need for a new church. In 1939, a crown lease of 99 years was granted. The Rector was Fred Burt. The stone for the church construction from the 'The Carrol', then owned by W. G. Hawkes. The building cost £750.00. Many of the church fittings were donated by local families and clergy. The church was dedicated on 11 June 1939, by the Most Reverend Frewen LeFanu D.D., the Archbishop of Perth and Primate of Australia.
