Statement of Significance

The Mullewa District High School has some historic and social value for its important role in the provision of education to the Mullewa community since the late 1930s. The school complex reflects the town's growth over time through the various additions and is characteristic of school buildings of its era. The School precinct is a landmark building and site for the town.

Physical Description

Located in the heart of Mullewa, the Mullewa District High School is set in grassed grounds with a large sports oval set to the south of the buildings. The main building complex fronts Jose Street and extends eastward. The buildings are of red brick construcion to window sill height and rendered in a cream finish above. The hipped corrugated iron roofscape is punctuated by several tall chimneys. The school complex comprises a number of buildings reflecting its development over time.

History

The first school in the MullewaDistrict, comprising a one-room wooden building with an iron roof, opened in 1895 near the old Govemment Well in Stock Street. During the early 1900s a new school was constructed just to the north ofthe present Town Hall. With the population of the Mullewa district increasing there was a need for new schooling facilities, so just prior to World War 2, a new brick classroom was built on the present site, further north on Jose Street. At the same time a residence for the Headmaster was built alongside. Following the end ofWorld War 2 the number of school students increased rapidly, particularly when more school bus routes were established in the surrounding areas. In 1952, major additions were made to the original brick classroom, increasing the complex to three classrooms and one pavilion classroom as well as other school amenities. A commemorative plaque affixed to the wall at the time states: "This tablet commemorates the opening of additions to the school on October 3rd 1952, by the Minister for Works and Water Supply, the Honourable David Brand, MLA, AF Watts, CMG MLA, Minster for Education. TL Robertson, MA, PhD, Dip Ed, Director of Education". Since that time the main building has been extended in the same style to add another two classrooms.
