Simple single-storey cottages on compact blocks with no fencing but separated by native peppermint trees and narrow gravel grid style lanes; constructed of fibro and/or timber
Peaceful Bay was used for the summer grazing of inland stock until the 1930s and 1940s, especially by farmers from the Lake Muir, Manjimup and Kojonup areas. By the1940s, about 10 families regularly spent summer holidays at Peaceful Bay, and a number of professional salmon fishermen also had permanent camps there. Road access into the area was improved in the 1950s and the summer camping in the area became more popular, leading to the construction of some permanent camps. In April 1956 there were four permanent camps at Peaceful Bay, and submissions were put to the Roads Board and the Lands Department requesting lease or freehold land for the construction of beach huts. Subsequently, Reserve 24510 was set aside for Camping and Recreation, with the option of leases up to 21 years. In 1957, Peaceful Bay Settlement, comprising 90 lots of 50 by 100 feet, was surveyed. Due to high demand, a further 40 lots were released for lease in 1958, and another 73 in 1961. Also in 1961, the Peaceful Bay Association was formed to manage internal issues such as speed limits and constructing a children’s playground, and to advocate for the lessees with the Shire of Denmark. Many amenities, including the telephone connection, were built through busy-bees arranged by the Association. Despite formal leases being in place for lots within the settlement, unauthorised building continued. From the early 1970s there were petitions for the option of freehold title, but this has not eventuated. From the early 1980s it was reported that over 30 families were permanently residing at Peaceful Bay Settlement. Shack owners have continued to come from inland agricultural areas (eg. Kojonup & Manjimup) that historically summer-grazed the area.
