Statement of Significance

The tree has aesthetic value as an excellent example of oak trees in a park setting. The tree has historic value for its association with the Spencer family who settled on this locality in 1833 and planted the tree c.1870. The tree has social value as the focus of this small park which has been the venue for informal gatherings for many years and the inspiration for planting of adjacent oak trees.

Physical Description

This tree is located within a reserve which is predominantly grass with a small playground and seating. A masonry wall located within the park has several plaques that recognise the contribution of the Spencer family to the establishment of the district.

History

This area of Langford was granted to Charles Spencer (c.1802-1872) in 1852 and it is believed that his son, John Spencer (1829-1910) planted the acorn which grew into this tree in c.1870. Charles and John Spencer farmed in the district and John built up a landholding of approximately 1000 acres. The park is dedicated to the Spencer family and there is a memorial seat in the park with plaques erected by Spencer descendents in recognition of their family's contribution to the establishment of the district. Several other Oak trees have been planted in the vicinity in recognition of the original tree.
