Statement of Significance

The Dalkeith Hall has historic and strong social heritage significance. The Hall is situated amongst a shopping precinct which is central to the Dalkeith community. Dalkeith Hall is used often by the people of the City of Nedlands for a range of activities including young children's playgroups and a Bridge club. Historically it has been the location of a number of significant meetings and social functions since it opened in 1956. It has further heritage value owing to its association with architect, W G Bennett who was also involved with a number of other projects in the City of Nedlands. W G Bennett and Associates designed the Child Health Clinic, the Nedlands Council Offices and Dalkeith Tennis Club.

Physical Description

This single storey building was designed by architect, W G Bennett. It has little aesthetic significance. Constructed from a colour blend of cream, salmon and chocolate brickwork, the building has a complex pattern of low pitch roof appendages and a raised brick parapet over the south wall of the hall proper. Additions at the front and east side do not help the visuaJ qualities of the complex. The salmon and chocolate brickwork has now (in mid 1998) been covered by render. It is set in a bituminised paved site with rose gardens along the street front.

History

The Dalkeith Hall was opened in 1956. It has been the scene of numerous social occasions for the Nedlands community. One of the most significant events marked with a ceremony at the Hall was the declaration of City status for Nedlands which occurred in 1959. Today (1998) among other uses, the Hall is hired for bridge club and Gymbaroo, a children's play association.
