Statement of Significance

The place is an attractive example of a Federation Gothic style church exhibiting a simple rectangular form with a steeply-pitched gable roof, stepped buttresses, warm-coloured face brick walls and contrasting rendered detailing. The place is associated with John Buckingham, who constructed the building using locally made bricks and timber. The place is valued by the community as a long-standing venue for religious congregation and worship and continues to be used by the local religious community.

Physical Description

The place comprises a single-storey brick and iron church building featuring tuck-pointed brickwork laid in English bond to the front elevation (and stretcher bond elsewhere) with contrasting rendered banding, a steeply-pitched gable roof, and gothic arched windows to the east and west elevations, positioned in the regularly spaced bays formed by the stepped masonry buttresses. The front elevation features a set of three arched windows, accentuated by rendered architraves, and simple timber fretwork to the upper gable. A recent brick and iron addition is attached to the front elevation of the church, enclosing the entry porch. Another lean-to addition is located to the rear of the church building, along with a free standing ablution block constructed of concrete blocks, and a fibro-clad community centre.

History

This building was constructed by John A. Buckingham in 1905, using locally made bricks, and was one of a number of Congregational churches in the Armadale district. (in 1915, there were five churches in the area, with the first completed in Armadale in 1903). The foundation stone was laid by Mr. Jacoby.
