This place is representative of early development that occurred within the Surbiton Estate, promoted by Gold Estates, a company that was influential in the development of Bayswater. It has historic value for its associations with the Menmuir family, who were involved with the Roads Board.
This elevated brick house rests on a stone and brick plinth. It has a corrugated metal hip roof vented at the peaks and pierced by two large symmetrically placed brick chimneys with moulded cement cappings. The roof covers the concrete verandah which runs across the front and down each side and the eaves are supported by full height wooden posts with an open rail balustrade. Windows to the fronts are full height double hung sashes and the central front panelled door has top and side lights. Cement steps lead up to the verandah.
This house was built on the Surbiton Estate which was promoted by Gold Estates around 1910. Building was proceeding in this area from 1911. This house was built by David Menmuir who arrived from the goldfields around 1911. His son, Edward (Ted) Menmuir, was a successful Roads Board Chairman in the difficult few years after the Second World War.
