The shops have associations with an early identity in the Lake Grace area, and have considerable value for their contribution to the main street streetscape and the character of Lake Grace.
The brick construction with rendered frontage and parapet was constructed from locally manufactured bricks. The name and date are embossed in the render. A skillion verandah with corrugated iron cladding extends over the pavement and is supported by square timber columns. The shop entry is recessed and the shop windows are truncated into the entries. The two shop fronts are mirrored with the entries central.
McMahon was one of the pioneers of Lake Grace. He was responsible for excavating the 2nd dam at White dam in 1912. He first took up land at Merilup, and in 1908 took up his Lake Grace land. After marrying in 1914, he settled in Lake Grace in 1921. The development of the Lake Grace townsite during the early 1920s provided the stability for the development of retail shops such as these. The shops have had many uses over the years. Originally , a cafe, chemist and coffee palace. The four brick shops were in a prime position near post office corner and the railway station to get the crowds who came into town on the Thursday train days. In later years (c1995?) the two eastern most shops were destroyed by fire.
