Statement of Significance

George Guessnor was the first white person buried in Cranbrook before the present cemetery was established. George Guessnor was a German resident in the district and was found floating in the Gordon River. It appears he had been there for some days. Many stories relate to him regarding his association with the war and his reason for being in the area. It is believed he committed suicide after a visit to town where he was insulted for being a German during the First World War (Rene Waring confirmed story).

Physical Description

The grave is surrounded by weather beaten white gum strainer posts It is situated half way between the second and third white posts past Newton Road on the Tambellup Cranbrook Highway. It is approximately 20m from the road.
