A landmark Funcionalist "Moderne/Art Deco" Cottesloe block of flats of considerable importance.
"Riviera", A two storey interwar block of flats, 1937-8, that employs many of the elements of the "American Art Deco" or "Moderne" style while retaining a traditional hipped clay tiled roof. The "Deco" styling is confined mainly to balconies, stairs, verandah canopies and the treatment of the main stair with its parapeted squat tower form and triangular oriel window. Verandahs have been partly infilled and the articulation has been lost. Much joinery has been replaced. The walls are of brick finished in white paint .render, with a mixture of aluminium and timber joinery. The roof is the traditional hipped clay tiled format.
The land was originally owned by Lord Forrest right down to Marine Parade. It was developed after 1929 when Lady Forrest died. Her Beach Cottage/Studio was immediately behind. Nancy Rosalind Humphrey sold these rental flats in 1939 to M.O. Palmer.
