Statement of Significance

Physical Description

Single storey timber framed and weatherboard cottage with red painted corrugated iron hipped roof with vented gablet. Fibro clad additions to the front. Centrally placed bay window to the façade.

History

This cottage was believed to have been built c1913 for Francis Joseph Fewster (1858-1929) and his wife Mary Louisa Fewster nee Verinder and their three children. The Fewsters lived in Victoria Park and this residence appears to have been a weekender or a holiday home and was named 'Mountain Rest'. From 1922, the house is believed to have been occupied by Mrs Emily Wilson who lived in the house for some years before opening up the house for visitors. She took guests during the 1930s and the place was described in 1931 as 'On the crest of Kalamunda … overlooking Perth and situated midst rustic surroundings. Every convenience - modern wireless set installed.' Emily Wilson is believed to have lived in the Fewster cottage then built additions to the house for her guests. Emily Wilson died in 1948 and since then the place has been used as a private residence and undergone some alterations and additions. The basic central form of the house has not been altered significantly.
