The discovery of gold in this area in 1887 was most significant as it set in motion the future development of the area as a mining district. A plaque, erected first in 1929 and then replaced in 1981 after it had been stolen, commemorates the first gold mining lease in the Eastern Goldfields. It is erected near the NNW boundary of what was Kathleen GML 3811. Now classified as Reserve No. 32449, it is vested in the Royal WA Historical Society, in trust as a national monument. The inscription on the present plaque states: "This tablet, erected by the citizens of Yilgarn, is on the first gold mining lease in the Eastern Goldfields 1888, and was unveiled by Hon Philip Collier MLA Premier of WA 17-8-1929".
The Golden Valley gold mine site is situated on the old Jackson Rd northwest of Bullfinch. The first goldmining lease in the Eastern Goldfields, including this area, was taken out in 1888. The site was commemorated with a plaque in 1929. After it was stolen in 1981, a replacement plaque, donated by Golden Valley Mines, was erected by the Southern Cross Historical Society. The area was located in C.C. Robret's pastoral lease, No 3114/80, but in 1973 it was relinquished by the owner and is now a reserve commemorating a Historical Monument. Nearby is the original tunnel mined out by hand in search of gold. It is 60m long and extends underground for about 20m.
