Statement of Significance

Kweda townsite and the places and elements that remain demonstrate a way of life in small siding town developed from 1915 and represents the early development of the Shire of Brookton and the tenacity of the local people in retaining their sense of community.

Physical Description

KWEDA HALL: Single storey timber framed and iron clad with vertical sheets. The gable roof breaks pitch over the verandahs along both side enclosed and part open. KWEDA RAILWAY REMNANTS: Water tower and tank, bridge, pump shed with remaining boiler, and railway dam. KWEDA GOLF CLUB: Single storey timber framed corrugated iron buildings.

History

Settlers had been in the area since early 1900. In 1915, the Brookton Kunjinn (Corrigin) railway line opened with a siding at Kweda. Kweda was gazetted as a townsite in 1915, at the same time that the school opened with 16 pupils. In 1957 the railway closed. School closed in 1972. The pump from the Railway Dam Pumphouse is now a water feature at Brookton Railway Station.
