Statement of Significance

The place has historic significance as a building representing the commercial and industrial development of the area of north Subiaco close to the railway from the Inter-War period to the period of redevelopment of the area in the 1990s. The building is a good and substantially intact example of the Inter-War Functionalist style.

Physical Description

A masonry construction commercial building comprising two intersecting office wings addressing Price and Tighe Streets. The focus of the building is the main entrance which is located between the two wings and addresses the corner. The entrance comprises a semi-circular shaped structure constructed of concrete with a door in the centre and a vertical ribbed effect to the façade. The original brick section of the building has cantilevered concrete awnings to the windows.

History

Originally Western Chemicals c1920, then Western Oxygen (1926-1935), Commonwealth Industrial Gases (CIG) (1935). Name change to BOC in 1994. The present plant and admin building was constructed in 1930s. Extensions to the original plant occurred as the need arose, with the east wing of the admin added in the late 1950s. Production ceased at the plant in the early 1980s. The entire company will relocate to Kewdale in 2001. (Ref: HCWA documentation.)
