Statement of Significance

• The place has historic value for its association with the Barrett family who lived at the property for many years. • The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the Yarloop heritage area. • The place demonstrates the standard type of housing provided for mill workers by their employers.

Physical Description

Single storey timber framed structure with fibro and weatherboard cladding and constructed on a brick base. The roof is gabled in form with short sheet corrugated iron cladding. The skillion roofed verandah canopy is supported on timber columns, the base is concrete and is enclosed by timber picket balustrade. The openings are metal framed windows. There are timber framed fibro additions and outbuildings to the rear.

History

One of the simple timber cottages built in the townsite for the accommodation of workers at the Yarloop workshops. The workshops milled timber but also manufactured and maintained the machinery needed for all aspects of the timber industry. The houses were built predominantly by the company which owned and managed the town, Millar's Timber and Trading Company from the 1890s to the 1970s. The materials for the cottages were likely to have been manufactured in the workshop and local tradesmen built the homes to standard designs. The name Barrett House appears to originate with Thomas Frank Barrett (1915-?) and his wife Edwina Alice who lived in Yarloop in the 1930s and 1940s. Frank Barrett, as he was known, was a timber worker at the mill and went on to live and work in Boyanup and Capel in the 1950s and 1960s. This building survived the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire.
