Physical Description

goods receiving Other uses: local "drinking" place Current Use: history Description: Goods Shed: A one room freestanding construction, raised from the ground with a platform at the front where there is an opening. The place is timber framed on timber stumps and with weatherboard cladding and a skillion corrugated iron roof. Evidence suggests there may have been a sliding door across the "hole" at some stage. Salesyards: Timber fences and runs

History

The goods shed is situated over the road from the store site, on the site of the original Lake King Tearooms. The goods shed was the receival and despatch centre for all goods to and from Lake King and surrounding areas. The store was the gallon licence, and with the absence of a hotel or other licensed premises, the goods shed became the social gathering place after having visited the local store for alcoholic beverages, hence the name "hole n the wall" was coined. Permission was required to put seats in the goods shed. They were officially installed as parcel racks, by a "Buffs" busy bee. The yards and loading ramps were built by the railways for the loading of sheep and stock for markets. The first big sale at the yards was held by Dalgety in the 1950s. The "hole in the wall" remained a popular spot until the Lake King Tavern was opened in 1987.
