Statement of Significance

Minim Cove is an attractive foreshore area which is relatively undisturbed due to its inaccessibility. The site has geological and archaeological importance due to the fossils in the cliffs and Aboriginal tool finds. The area is part of the early route between Fremantle and Perth.

Physical Description

A small cover in steep, limestone rock cliffs with a sandy beach on the north bank of the Swan River. Vegetation is a mix of native and introduced specie. A walking and cycling path passes above the cove. There is no east access down into the cove itself. To the east is Minim Cove Reserve which includes an old quarry site, a former rubbish tip and the former Billy Goat Farm. To the north and west a large area, formerly used for industrial purposes, and before that the Rocky Bay quarry for limestone for Fremantle port works, is being redeveloped for housing.

Other Keywords

Minim Cove exhibits fossils from the Pleistocene period and a tool making site for aboriginals.

According to Tuettemann, P. 27, in the middle of the nineteenth century there was a small jetty at Minim Cove, due south of Palmerston Street, and a ferry crossed between there and Preston Point. At the turn of the century it was intended that a railway line should cross the river at Minim Cove. Test piles were placed but the area was found to be unsuitable.
