Statement of Significance

Chelsea Village has aesthetic. historic. social and representative cultural heritage significance. Its two storey plan was heralded as a breakthrough in shopping centre design in the early 19708 when shopping centres were only just taking shoppers away from street shop developments (such as in Broadway and Hampden Road). It is a good example of a small shopping centre with a broad variety of specialist shops and services working alongside the hospitality industry.

Physical Description

Chelsea Village is a commercial Shopping complex fronting south on Stirling Highway. It faces internally onto its own piazza. with a northern outlook to a carpark. Construction is of load bearing brickwork, reinforced concrete floors and corrugated iron roofing. It was a successful development for its time, especially in its use of space. Beresford Collins received a Clay Brick Award in 1973 for the design of Chelsea Village. When first opened this painted brick development consisted of a lavern and restaurant, food outlets and a series of retail shops. On the upper level there were a number of professional suites and offices.

History

Chelsea Village opened in December 1972. It was quite an innovative design and before its opening was heralded as a breakthrough in the normal approach to shopping centres and parking for a complex on a major highway. However, problems arose for the centre as early as )974 when parking problems resulted in a large number of fines for shoppers and people visiting Chelsea Tavern. Today the centre continues to operate (though the Tavern has closed) with professional suites. offices and retail shops.
