Statement of Significance

Poverty Flats has historic significance as the site where gold was discovered.

Physical Description

Poverty Flats is the name given to an area of land immediately west of Mount Magnet. The area is recognised by a plaque mounted on a rock.

History

Poverty Flats is where alluvial gold was discovered by Steadman in November, 1891 while he was searching for a lost swag. It was not long before many prospectors were attracted to the area to find their fortunes. [Drawn to Mt Magnet, p40]
