The building is important for its long association with education in the town.
The school is sited on the old recreation reserve and is relatively central to home sites in the Williams township. Extensions have been made to the original building to cater for increased numbers - the major need coming with the closure of the small district schools and bussing of students to a central school. As an interim measure, the Agriculture Hall was used as an annex. In 1952 and 1967 demountable/prefabricated classrooms were added to the complex to cater for the increase in numbers. In 1968 a new wing was added to the existing building to serve as an administration centre, classroom, home economics, manual arts and science rooms.
The school has operated at this site for almost 70 years. In 1928 due to severe overcrowding at the previous site with 37 boys and 33 girls in one room a new building was necessary. A new site was chosen as the existing school was located close to a rail crossing and a road with increasing vehicle traffic. The re-location also reflected the growth of the new townsite and increased numbers of children requiring education. Following the extensions in 1968 the school was upgraded to a Junior high School and at that time 5 buses were transporting 110 students daily to the school. In January 1975, the school was designated in District High School meeting the criteria of an average daily enrolment of 150 pupils of whom at least 25 were in the secondary school. At this time Keith Hoffman (the principal) had a staff of 10 to assist running the school.
