Statement of Significance

The place has associations with the earliest settlement in the region, and convict labour.

History

Built by convicts in 1850. (1854?) It was the first bridge over the Capel River and is located where the river enters the estuary. The causeway was built over the sandbar which forded the river. In 1866, it was burnt by Aboriginal's fires and rebuilt. The bridge is located adjacent to Norton's Glen Albyn homestead, and is an extension of the causeway constructed by the convicts in 1850. The existing bridge was possibly constructed in the 1930s.
