The place is a good representative example of a metropolitan church in the Federation Gothic style. The place is a landmark in the streetscape and its longevity on the site has contributed to the community’s sense of place. The place is associated with the settlement of the West Perth area as a residential suburb in the late 1890s. The place is associated with Sir John Forrest, architect James Hine and builder Robert Gamble.
Brick and tile church designed in Gothic style with steeply pitched roof, gables and pointed arched (Gothic) windows. Decorative stucco and rendered bands.
Ross Memorial Church was constructed in 1916-1917 as the Anglican Church for West Perth. The Church outgrew its former West Perth location, and this location accommodated the larger building. The hall was built first and opened in 1913. As the congregation outgrew this building it was decided to raise funds for a new church building. The foundation stone was laid by the Rt. Hon. Sir John Forrest assisted by Lady Forrest on 1st July 1916. The architect was James Hine and the builder was R.A. Gamble. It was named for Rev Daniel Ross who was the Minister in 1912 at the time of the church’s construction and who died in 1918. During the 1960s the character of West Perth changed, and the church was no longer an important part of the community. In 1987 the hall was demolished, and a retail building and meeting room were constructed using bricks from the hall. The Church is one of the three ‘Uniting Church in the City’ which also includes Wesley Church and Trinity Church. The Church is currently used by the Uniting Church for Sunday services as well as a place of meditation. The Karen Baptist Group from Thailand also uses the church for their services.
High level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as it is largely as originally constructed with detail intact.
