Statement of Significance

The place is of significant for its associations with the historic Cloisters building and contribution to the city scene. Noteworthy example of successful attempt to rehabilitate mature existing tree and integrate into major city development.

Physical Description

Ficus Rubiginous, single tree, height 18m, circumference 3.9m, canopy spread 15.3 & 18.2m (National Trust of Australia assessment 5/11/84 in COP File No 1.11/200A). Mature tree, feature of forecourt major office complex.

History

This Port Jackson fig tree has had a long history of association with the growing City of Perth. It is an indigenous Australian Plant and in 1887 was given as a small tree to the newly arrived family of Mr and Mrs William Stephen's who lived for a time in the cloisters. The tree and adjoining cloisters buildings have been preserved by the owners of Mt Newman House as part of Perth's heritage. Plaque at the base of the tree.
