The house at the corner of Gwalla Street and Third Ave is significant aesthetically as a good example of its type and period, and for its contribution to the townscape.
This single storey timber framed and weatherboard clad house addresses the corner of Gwalla Street and Third Ave quite strongly for its modest character. The plan form, under the main hipped roof with gambrel ends, is four roomed with central passage and is therefore a step up from the simple miner's cottages in many parts of the town. The front verandah is supported on timber posts and is attached separately just below the main roof. The strong roof form is completed with a brick chimney. There are some additions and enclosures at the rear of the house but these do not impose on its character from the street. The choice of external paint colour could be selected from a range more representative of the period.
This house was owned by Julia Smith (1911/35 Rate Books), and then by J. N. Smith (1939/40 Rate Book).
