Statement of Significance

Aesthetic Value – Importance for its contribution to the aesthetic values of the setting demonstrated by a landmark quality and having impact on important vistas. Research Value – Importance for information/archaeological material contributing to a wider understanding of natural history by virtue of its use as a research site, teaching site, type locality, reference or benchmark site.

Physical Description

Wandagee Hill contains important stratigraphic type sections. The value of the site could be ruined through indiscriminate fossil collecting.

History

The area is one of very subdued relief and occupies the floodplain of the Minilya River and its tributaries. Wandagee Hill is about 100 metres high and is formed by a resistant outlier of Permian Kennedy group. Much of the region is a well developed etch plain developed on fine grained sediments of the Byro group by the down cutting and lateral shifts of river courses during Pliocene and Pleistocene times. Extensive alluvial fans and dunes have been developed, primarily in the late Pleistocene. The surrounding country is arid to semi-arid, with a rainfall of around 200mm. Vegetation is mostly hummocky grass and spinifex covered plans, and areas of open acacia shrub and stands of rover gums are present along the main water course. The locality is an important fossil and research site to the state.
