: Kalgoorlie. Inland City Hotel is significant for its continuity of use.
Two distinct stages appear in the extant building. The earliest of the two is a single storey building which occupies the street corner site with wide bullnosed verandahs returned along the side street (Lane Street). Adjoining, immediately to the south-west in Forrest Street, is a two-storey iron-roofed building with a verandah and parapet with a 1935 date painted on it. The structure appears older than that and is in poor condition with little decorative fabric remaining, although what does remain appears to be c. 1935 fabric. The balcony of the upper floor verandah and the valance of the lower floor of the two-storey building have been over-sheeted with painted ribbed metal cladding. Note: The design style of the single-storey structure is Federation Filigree, c. 1890 - c. 1915, while the two-storey structure has all of the characteristics of the Filigree style. By 1930, the Filigree influence had waned with no equivalent in the Inter-War period. A likely explanation is that the two-storey structure appears to have been extensively refurbished in the 1930s. With the changed nature of rail travel, the Inland City Hotel buildings are now located some distance from the centre of activity in the town. Nevertheless, this large establishment has the potential to provide streetscape values to the township.
The building was established as a hotel and continues to be used as a hotel. General Comments: The role of hotels was crucial to the social and economic life on the goldfields. If mines were the sources of the miner's wages, the hotels were the sinks into which a lot of it was poured. Hotels not only provided alcoholic drinks, food and accommodation, but provided men with comfortable surroundings quite beyond their normal experience. Hotels were also vital social centres for travellers and residents alike (Webb, 1993: 543-544).
