Statement of Significance

Rail transport was an important method of transport and assisted in developing this district.

Physical Description

Situated on the Narrogin/Collie Railway between the Culbin and Hillman sidings. The siding complex consisted of siding hut, loading ramp, stock yards, with a siding spur line. The remnants of the loading ramp are the only visible evidence of the existence of the siding while a palm about 50 m east of the siding marks the position of the stock yards. Operated as a siding on the Narrogin/Darkan/Collie line from 1906 until the line closure.

History

Its main function was to collect timber (sleepers and mallet bark), wool and sundries (eg cream, eggs) and deliver superphosphate, machinery and sundry small parcels. Named after the nearby watercourse 'Dardadine Gully' a tributary of the Hillman (Arthur/Blackwood) River. (1) Possibly derived from the Aboriginal work 'djudidjun' - place of native cat. (2) Surveyor BW Ridley in his field book in October 1895, referred to Dardadine Creek. Maps in 1897 showed it as Dadering Creek and in 1904 it was marked as Darderdine Gully. The watercourse officially reverted to its original name - "Daderdine Creek" in 1971. (3) The first pastoral lease selected in the Dardadine area was a block of 40,000 acres chosen by WG and CF Brown in the 1880's. This block was about 6 miles long (north to south) and included 'Quiliping Pool' and 5 miles to the south 'Carlacarling Pool' in the Dardadine Creek. There were no roads in the Dardadine area at this time except for a track from Williamsburg to Kojonup, said to be the original Albany road which followed the track of Surveyor Hillman. (4)
