Statement of Significance

The place represents the value of a Doctor in a country town, and a way of life.

Physical Description

The architecture is distinctive in Corrigin. It is a Mediterranean style with white cement rendered walls and a low pitch orange terracotta roof. The gabled roof has prominent gables facing the street at each end of the pavilion like structure. One The north end has an arched entry to the surgery in the gable facade. The east end has windows and is part of the private residential section. Linking the two gable sections is a verandah with a series of arches.

History

The Shire of Corrigin constructed the place. It is difficult to get health professionals to stay in country towns, so it is common practice for the Shire to construct facilities such as this to provide a comfortable lifestyle for a prospective health professional. It is very important for a town to have a Resident Doctor. In 1946 Dr AF (Paddy) Janes arrived in Corrigin after serving in World War Two. He remained the Shire Medical Officer for 21 years, served on the Hospital Board, was President of the RSL for 15 years, President of Rotary, Bowling Club, Foundation member of the Pool Committee, Chairman if the St John Ambulance, and a Justice of the Peace. He left Corrigin in 1967 and died in 1968. The Shire instigated Doctor's surgery and residence was being constructed prior to Dr Janes leaving, which was possibly in anticipation of that fact, and providing for the future Doctor to come to Corrigin. The surgery and residence was opened in 1969, and was the first purpose built facility of its type in Corrigin.
