The dam has social and historic heritage significance. George Sherriff in his history of Denmark wrote; "The nightly water train to Rudgyard was only a temporary measure until a permanent water supply could be established. To provide this a small creek at the foot of Mt Shadforth was dammed and water reticulated through the township". The dam was built by the Millar Brothers timber milling company to supply water for their employees. During the 1920s and 30s this dam continued to be referred to as "Millars Dam". It became a vital water source to the Butter Factory, Hospital and Research Station. This is the oldest surviving man made structure in Denmark town.
The dam is at the foor of Jamieson Hill off Mt Shadforth Road. It is surrounded by bush.
